Yesterday's radio commercials and related jingles are disposable flotsam and jetsam. Often rescued from the dumpster and tape eraser, here's where they live to celebrate another day, and give us a peek into the pop culture of the past. All material has been sourced from tapes or vinyl discs (records) used on the air at radio stations or dubs of said tapes, transferred for pristine quality when possible.

I'm lacking in creative titles for this month's exhibit. Let's leave it at that I guess.
A bit of a different take to start off 2018, with some commericals/spots from a pair of 1960s "ET's" which are electrical transcriptions. That term dates back to the 1930s when the failed experiment for putting sound to film evolved into the 16 inch radio transcription which was in the pre tape era of radio recording. the electrical in the term refers to the use of electrical record equipment used from about the mid 1920s on to record and make records. The previous way had a singer sing loud into a big horn, or likewise for a orchestra, they had to play loud. that was called "acoustic"
By the 1960s though, the term was a bit outdated. The LP was well known (the 12" version of the transcription, with "microgroove" grooves as they called them for a period of time) and often agencies would press their commericals onto vinyl because the sound was felt to be better to play off a record on the air then the fairly new broadcast cartridge tape format (grandfather of the 8 track!)
Eventually, the broadcast cart won out and was widely used until computer automation took over in the 1990s, commericals from the mid 1970s on where primarily tape (as proven here in the jetsam with pics of the tape boxes) but thankfully, we have some of these commericals because of the ET aspect of it. Here's two of them for you. Not all of these are jingles, in fact there are no full sings here, but still some neat nostalgia to serve up.
Also this month, our contributor Sammy brings me TTS 3004 to post this month, after talking about it briefly last month. It's dated like all of the jingles of this sort, but there's still a charm about it. Now we just need some campy ad copy to go with it and y'all be all set YEE HAH!
It's been a busy and roller coaster 2017 so far, but I have come out alive with a new and better work enviroment, less stress and more time so say "hey, let's post something on the jetsam"
I'll never be as consistent as when I started on this blog in 2010. It really comes down to material. I guess I have posted most of the "good stuff" Still, it will be when I feel a need to post something, I will. That will keep it going for the long term, which is the important part.

One of my projects recently on the jetsam is something you won't necessarily realize. Last year, I was made aware of some pages playing all the audio simultaneously. I have discovered that my old audio player coding in the pages was not up to HTML 5 standards, causing this issue. Newer posts included the newer player coding which seems to resolve this issue, but until recently the problem still exists in the older posts. I have now UPDATED ALL THE POSTINGS EXCEPT FOR THE YEAR 2010 with the new player. Given there are 29 posts for that year, it might still take me a bit of time to update, but it WILL be done in the near future. Gotta fix what's broken.
THE LOCAL STUFF-This time FURNITURE RELATED
We continue with material from my local area of the Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada region where I was working in the radio production side of a local radio station through the 1980s and 1990s. I tended to take dubs of jingles or tapes being tossed out home, because, well, I liked them, and my hoarding/pacrat tendencies of yesterday met my wife's thoughts of what you can do with them today in 2010 and you have this blog. makes sense doesn't? The world of commerical is very much a throwaway culture, and only survives in the world of you tube far too often. This is why the jetsam exists as you probably know, but has only focused on the local stuff recently.
Here's TK's Carpet from the mid-late 1980s....as far as I know, the company has been long out of business, but thanks to some blitzed to death radio and TV ads in the 80s seen my impressionable young teenage and adults minds alike and a catchy jingle, it's still findly remembered. This is the rarely heard FULL SING with complete lyrics (without announcer)
This next full sing for Gallery One Furniture was also played heavily on the air in the late 80s, early 1990s. Produced by Seacoast Sound in Victoria, BC, while the company has moved on to other advertising styles, this jingle still motivates you to sing about the company brand in such a "group hug" kinda way, don't ya think?
Finally for local, we have a local moving company (they MOVE furniture!!!) Hoyt's Moving and Storage, who celebrated 40 years in the business when this jingle was produced. I remember they were a sponsor of the 8 am news of a local radio station and this jingle was drilled into my head on a daily basis when I was younger, so fun to have a copy of it when I am adult (yes, I am one most of the time!) circa 1979. They are still around.
I really don't think I can get bored digging into the Tanner Generic jingle LPs I have. The stuff is dated, corny and campy all at once. Exact dates are really unknown most of time, and they didn't come with documentation except for one album posted previous dates in the early 1970s, but still very entertaining in a "I can't believe someone used that" kind of way. here's two more complete albums randomly picked (I closed my eyes and just grabbed them...I don't think I have done them previously) and they certainly live up to what I have just mentioned.
After being sick last month around good friday, I decided to take the month off for a jetsam post. Yeah, lazy me.
We're back with jingles reflecting a invention of the mid 20th century....the TV dinner. Swanson was the first to have success, when sitting down in front of the TV to eat was the 1950s equilvalent of people and staring at their smartphones today (and people act like staring at screens is new!!! geesh). It was a time to give mom a break for cooking (Mcdonalds was just starting to have success around that time so fast food as we know it today was hardly known) and the family bonding in front of the TV while they watch their favorite shows. Banquet has been a Swanson competitor for almost as long as Swanson has turned out TV dinners, well according to their details on their own WEBSITE Banquet though started out with meat pies and that is reflected on the spots on this disc (see the labels for details!). One can argue which tastes better, Banquet or Swanson, but i've had both, so I'll leave the preferences for another day and let you enjoy these banquet radio spots from I believe 1960 to get you in the mood to head to the microwave and throw in your own TV dinner as you are too lazy to cook yourself something. Even after 60+ years, they are still cheaper then going out even for fast food. Enjoy..the spots and your TV dinner :)
Here at the jetsam, we focus on jingles. Afterall, we are the JINGLE jetsam. It's really a no brainer. I suppose this is why I have resisted these discs until now, because they aren't really jingles. Still, I know some of you hard cores are looking for Christmas material to complete your compilations, play in the background while you trim the tree, drive through a snowstorm in the car with (drive safely), whatever you want to do with the material to enjoy the holidays, so let's bend the rules on this post with some unique material from the past, likely the 1960s. ]
This first disc pretty much sums up everything Christmas I have from Lang Worth and has been posted on the jetsam. It could be called a radio show I suppose, as a few interesting tidbits from an announcer mixed in with very short versions of Christmas carols that sound older then Alastair Sim's version of "A Christmas Carol" in fact they'd probably fit in nicely in that film. Fun stuff for a compliation/mp3 player.
Now, we have from the Pepper Library what appears to be a generic feature that you can easily customize for a local advertiser called "Tales of Christmas" This disc comes complete with 6 stories each running around 4 minutes, and even the music theme bed to customize it with your local announcer for Joe Dry Cleaners, Barry's Locksmith company, or any other advertiser who wants to buy time to make themselves look good. Funny Thing is, to me, these stories have a cartoon feel to them in the production side of things. These remind me of the old 60s cartoon "The Mighty Hercules" where the voice actors tended to go a bit over the top because it's a kids cartoon. This is what these stories sound like. Not that's it's a bad thing, it's sort of adds to the charm of them. It's a bit less warm and fussy, and more over the top. I always expec Newton the Centaur from hercules to pop up on these somewhere. Enjoy.

Since it is summer, I thought I'd pull a few from the 80s and 90s with a summer theme or what aired in the summertime based on the dates on the tape boxes. We get rather Canadian focused for the most part, but funny thing is, 2 of the jingles cover American classic hits. I have made a single mp3 file for each reel tape this month, as it's just easier for me to deal with.
The Canadian Cancer Society in the summer of 1995 rewrote "Little Deuce Coupe" by the Beach Boys into "Slip Slap Slop" and created an effective way to remember to put on some sunscreen and stay out of the sun at certain times of the day. It's very memorable, and almost 20 years later, still effective. Just goes to show you how good song writing just seems to last forever. These aren't "full sing" jingles, there is people on these spots, but still fun to listen to for the entire spot.
Canadian Cancer Society-Sun Sense Radio Announcements (1995)
Speaking of the Beach Boys, which even the thought of them instantly transports you to a summer on the beach, the canadian burger chain "Harvey's" (since 1959) turned out this "Beach Boys" full sing jingle in the summer of 1986. I think it's safe to say it wasn't the group, or even one of their songs, but this sound alike is catchy, sticks in your ear and really makes me think of a fun summers day...though not necessarily eating burgers, unless your hungry of course...maybe that was the idea. Hungry? Harvey's!
Also on the summer menu is "The Keg" a Canadian Steakhouse restaurant chain founded in 1971 in Vancouver BC. Simply called "summer" I get the feeling this full sing jingle wants you to drop in when you have a chance and get a "taste of summer" which obviously includes steak. hell, beats cooking on a hot day.
Finally, Mcdonalds in Canada can't be left out. 20 years ago this month, they were promoting their Chicken Fajitas as a menu item by rewiring the classic hit "La Bamba" to their use. I really forget if they still have the product, I'll have to go look the next time i'm there, but don't go and expect the promotion price....You're about 20 years too late...:)
I've decided to take a break this summer with the jetsam. The main reason? I'm moving. I have a LOT of stuff. Only a fraction of it is heard on the jetsam. radio shows, a large vinyl and CD collection, studios for both production and my internet radio stream, all with vintage broadcast gear and computers, you can see where this is going. It takes time to pack and tear down and unpack and rebuild. The weekly radio show "Cheeze Pleeze" (www.cheezepleeze.com) and the stream (timecapsuleaudionetwork.tripod.com) will be given a bit of priority to be up and running and then the jetsam will be back. I thank you for all the letters and support i've had over the last year with this project, and want to stress, it's isn't permanent, it's just a break. we'll be back in the fall sometime.
Let's throw in one more exhibit before we start the break. Circa 1960s Wrigley spearmint gum jingles from another ET record that had me stand up and take notice when I saw the label. It's from the Universal Recording Corp in Chicago. It's a legendary studio in the city from the 1940s onward started by a man who pioneered numerous recording techniques and tricks and moved to hollywood in the late 50s to start yet another legendary recording studio of his design, Bill Putnam.

Well, I suppose records didn't just pay the bills alone...commerical jingles certainly helped too.
Another randomly picked LP from the pepper/tanner collection of albums I received awhile back. Some of this stuff is in such great shape I wonder if it was ever used. It really follows the belief of the jetsam, to help preserve the material that would have been lost and live for another day, or use.
With this bunch in particular, you can really let the imagination run wild, as some of these jingles can be uset up to be taken out of context. "Hey Pretty Girl" and "We Do" in particular stick out as a couple, that, well, have "possibilities depending on how creative you are, but hey, if you just like jingles, you'll enjoy them too.
