Back in 2014, we looked at Wrigley's Spearmint Gum jingles from the 1960s. the actual link to that post here HERE! Recently I found another disc from what seems to be around the same time, and a similar campaign, but here's the spots that are slightly different.

Celebrating a decade of the Jetsam.....

Today March 26th, marks a decade this little project I started because I collected all these tapes, and it's time to come up with something to do with them. Working in radio production for a couple of radio stations, I tended to take a few tapes home after the commericals were finished airing, before they were erased to be reused for other purposes. Stuff that caught my ears one way or another. My wife actually came up with the name, and I wrote the purpose as posted on this page. Everything came together, and over time, I've had people contact me looking for "that one spot" that they cannot find anywhere. I wish I was a miracle worker, but the reality is, I only have so many, and this is why posts have not been frequent over the last few months. This will continue, but this blog will not be considered dead in my mind. If I find something of interest, it will be posted.

For our 10th Anniversary, I have a rather incredibly nice package that is a time capsule of the mid 1960s that a friend gave me cleaning out his records. the "now sound" of the 1960s reflects in this jingle package that is more a PSA then anything else, about taking a portable radio everywhere you go a "lively companion" as it were. It was done right, top 40 artists and stars of the time, with the Johnny Mann Singers, who sang a majority of the big top 40 radio station jingles in the US and beyond of that time.

The whole package is colorful with distinctive artwork and coloring, so I have included lot of pics of the package.

Generic Cheese.......and how about a little beer with that?

We have more off the rack generic commericals they used to tie into a local sponsor, often as a start off to get your attention, and this stuff, likely from the late 1950s or early 1960s will do that. You could air this today to get someone's attention (with probably a bit of WTF moments by a listener) for nostalgia purposes I suppose. The great thing about virtually anything connected to advertising is that it's dated for the times, and is often why it's so great. Advertising defined the era it was in and this doesn't disappoint.

This disc has the same thing on both sides, so no sense is putting up 2 pics of the label. This company also did radio station jingles of the same era and a wide range of other services for radio stations. check out this link in a 1963 Billboard magazine HERE

Moving into the 1970s we bring you another reel of Beer spots from 40 years ago....likely they were on the air around this time in the year of 1976. TV Dinners.....and other frozen fun from the mid 20th Century!

After being sick last month around good friday, I decided to take the month off for a jetsam post. Yeah, lazy me.

We're back with jingles reflecting a invention of the mid 20th century....the TV dinner. Swanson was the first to have success, when sitting down in front of the TV to eat was the 1950s equilvalent of people and staring at their smartphones today (and people act like staring at screens is new!!! geesh). It was a time to give mom a break for cooking (Mcdonalds was just starting to have success around that time so fast food as we know it today was hardly known) and the family bonding in front of the TV while they watch their favorite shows. Banquet has been a Swanson competitor for almost as long as Swanson has turned out TV dinners, well according to their details on their own WEBSITE Banquet though started out with meat pies and that is reflected on the spots on this disc (see the labels for details!). One can argue which tastes better, Banquet or Swanson, but i've had both, so I'll leave the preferences for another day and let you enjoy these banquet radio spots from I believe 1960 to get you in the mood to head to the microwave and throw in your own TV dinner as you are too lazy to cook yourself something. Even after 60+ years, they are still cheaper then going out even for fast food. Enjoy..the spots and your TV dinner :)

Hi Ho Hey Hey It's our 4th Anniver sarrrrr ey.

OK, that sorta is kinda forced now isn't it?

Still, this month marks the 4th anniversary of the Jetsam. I really didn't think it was that long, but it is. Go figure. I've had ups and downs doing it, but i'm still here, and am glad I am. Hope you continue to enjoy the material here, and i'll answer questions and comments time permitting.

This month we go back likely to the late 1960s, if the titles of the versions of this jingle mean anything. Too often dates weren't put on these things, so you end up guessing. I can still make a somewhat educated one.

This was back when national ads were pressed on vinyl disc, often LP's sometimes 45s. This was a carry over from the old 16 inch transcription disc format from the 1930s-1950s, before tape. From what I have read, ad agencies considered the broadcast tape cartridge (the father of the 8 track) and tape in general to be inferior as a broadcast source then vinyl records, and often insisted (ok TOLD!) stations not to "cart" the audio from the record to playback on cartridge but to play the actual record to air. This mentality eventually disappeared as reel to reel tape became the standard in the 70s, and yes, Broadcast Cartridges did too, even into the 1990s when everything was replaced by a computer.

But tapes were often erased and reused, and well, it was impossible to do that with vinyl, unless you want to make a frisbee out of a record. So these gems still exist. Good thing.

There are 5 versions of the "Hi Ho Hey Hey" Jingle, all of which have that groovy 60s feel to them. All of which are within 1 mp3, to make it easy. Why did I post a photo of the flip side label? It's cool, and you don't see that everyday. I didn't bother with the audio, because, well, if you like silence with clicks and pops, fine, but I'm not big on it.

Yes, More Lang Worth Christmas.....and some Christmas stories from the generic jingle folks.....

Here at the jetsam, we focus on jingles. Afterall, we are the JINGLE jetsam. It's really a no brainer. I suppose this is why I have resisted these discs until now, because they aren't really jingles. Still, I know some of you hard cores are looking for Christmas material to complete your compilations, play in the background while you trim the tree, drive through a snowstorm in the car with (drive safely), whatever you want to do with the material to enjoy the holidays, so let's bend the rules on this post with some unique material from the past, likely the 1960s. ]

This first disc pretty much sums up everything Christmas I have from Lang Worth and has been posted on the jetsam. It could be called a radio show I suppose, as a few interesting tidbits from an announcer mixed in with very short versions of Christmas carols that sound older then Alastair Sim's version of "A Christmas Carol" in fact they'd probably fit in nicely in that film. Fun stuff for a compliation/mp3 player.

Now, we have from the Pepper Library what appears to be a generic feature that you can easily customize for a local advertiser called "Tales of Christmas" This disc comes complete with 6 stories each running around 4 minutes, and even the music theme bed to customize it with your local announcer for Joe Dry Cleaners, Barry's Locksmith company, or any other advertiser who wants to buy time to make themselves look good. Funny Thing is, to me, these stories have a cartoon feel to them in the production side of things. These remind me of the old 60s cartoon "The Mighty Hercules" where the voice actors tended to go a bit over the top because it's a kids cartoon. This is what these stories sound like. Not that's it's a bad thing, it's sort of adds to the charm of them. It's a bit less warm and fussy, and more over the top. I always expec Newton the Centaur from hercules to pop up on these somewhere. Enjoy.

The Last Of the Christmas Jingle Posts...Lang Worth...

You probably thought the Christmas Shopping Jingles was the end...

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!

Let's wrap it up with one more Christmas disc from Lang Worth. I just obtained it in September with a load of discs sitting in a friends basement for years. The date is believed to be early-mid 1960s.

Some fun jingles, and classic christmas music beds, each :60, to enjoy for yourself. with the time getting closer to christmas, I didn't both cutting them into individual tracks, just an mp3 for each side. this might work for you for the music though.

Off The Rack Generic Christmas Jingles....Just In Time for the Holidays....

Why oh why does everything Christmas come "just in time for the holidays"? Like it was actually a coincidence, and months of planning had no factor in the remarkable timing? It's getting so bad you're having "pre boxing week" sales leading up to Christmas...but isn't that a pre christmas sale? The commericalism is getting more and more foolish and arrogant every year I expect someone to just yell on TV or radio "JUST GO OUT AND BUY A F***** GIFT FOR SOMEONE WHY DON'T YA?" Yes, really, I do expect it.

But, enough of the soapbox, and more of why you're here....

From the Mars Production Library, comes this disc of both jingles and accapella one liners to incorporate into local station productions. Not sure of the date, but I'm gonna guess mid-late 1960s. Just tag them with your stations announcer or logo.

What I found this christmas though, is when I was playing background music at a charity event off my laptop, I mixed these in for good measure. They might be fun for a Christmas CD compilation you can share with your friends or a get together to add a bit of spice to your music mix. Enjoy!

Wheat' N Burgers

Two well known food brands with no real relation to each other, except showing up in this post on the Jetsam. I'm sure I wouldn't recommend each both at the same time, but i'm guessing eating worse things at the same time has happened over the years, so by all means if you have a hankering to do so, go for it. Just don't tell me about it, OK?

We start with Nabisco's Cream Of Wheat, a breakfast cereal around for decades, actually more like centuries, as it's creation dates back to 1893 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It's the next best thing to oatmeal on those cold days where you want something warm to stick to your insides, or maybe you prefer it to oatmeal? Either way, we fast forward to January 1965 with these spots produced for a particular type of day voiced by a well known actor of the time, Mason Adams.

Mason's voice did quite a few of Madison Avenues TV and Radio commerical offerings through the 60's and 70s. He would also do on camera roles as a character actor, the most famous likely was managing editor Charles Hume on the TV series "Lou Grant" His wiki entry is HERE

These spots hold up very well for being over 45 years old. That's sometimes the power of good basic copywriting and a strong delivery by the VO actor

This reel of tape was mixed amongst another pile of reels, so I slapped it on the machine, and next thing I know, I find a 1970s sounding Mcdonalds spot. Well, I think it's safe to say it's 1970s, probably early 1970s, with the "You Deserve A Break Today" jingle singing out the spot. I can't confirm the VO voice, but it really sounds like Canadian Keith Hampshire, who we've mentioned on the Jetsam before, and had a couple records out around this time. he sings and does voice overs for TV and radio...busy guy! Apologies that the quality isn't the greatest, but given I stumbled on this spot that should have been long ago erased, I think we can overlook that a bit, doncha think?

Off The Rack Jingle Pt 2-Generic Station Promos

For future posts, I am going to rotate between radio commercial jingles and "Off the Rack" generic jingles (at least until the lawyers come after me for posting copyrighted "dated " material that is outdated and has little value other then talking about it and nostalgic reasons for the hard cores fanatics like myself) Yeah, this is worth spending big bucks on a lawyer for isn't it? PUHLEASE! I'm broke, I make no money from this venture...if you have a problem with this stuff please email me.

We Get Letters...

Speaking of email, I love hearing from people who have comments or requests. I've received two emails so far from people who have tripped across The Jingle Jetsam. One is from a guy in BC who actually runs a jingle company. He found my first post online about "Bunsmaster" Bakeries. Apparently there's a company in BC who still owns the name and was looking to get a jingle produced similar to the original from the 80's but he had no reference and "Googling" came across the Jetsam. Well, now he has heard the original jingle.

I also received a letter from someone in Montreal who is a fan of classic radio and enjoyed the Lang Worth post of 50's generic jingles. He also says interesting things about "Cheeze Pleeze" (time for a shameless plug - that's my online podcast/syndicated show dedicated to cheezy music... there is a link on the blog for the Facebook group). He was comparing the male character Snarfdude to Classic top 40 DJ's Dick Biondi and Joey Reynolds... really? Geesh, I know SD sounds like he drinks too much Red Bull, but I never thought it was to that level..... thanks..... I think.....

Right Off the Rack...

This leads me into thinking would Dick or Joey use the following posted jingles in their day? Possibly.

The Pepper Creative Library Sales Service was a series of generic jingles and sound effects for local radio stations for everything from clients who ran drive ins, car washes, supermarkets... you get the idea... to station promo material. Like anything else with "Off The Rack" intent, the lyrics are generic, nothing specific and then the announcer comes on with local client customized copy. Big important sound, low price for the client.

Over the years, the name changed from Pepper to Pepper/Tanner to Tanner, then eventually TM and these days likely Jones TM (love these corporate mergers!) but like anything dated at a radio station, it often meets the dumpster far sooner then it really should, and we're left with the memory and not much else. But wait, there's a bit of a happy ending.

Thanks to a ex-radio station former co-worker who kept a few boxes of these LP's in his basement for decades we have some excellent examples for the Jetsam.

I'll post more eventually, but let's start off with a sample of the Pepper material I have with 2 full LP offerings of mainly station promo material - it falls into the catagory of "I can't believe someone aired that". Well, just goes to show you how times really have changed in the last 50 years. Maybe this is what the late Bill Drake, the co-creator of the "Boss Radio" Format in the late 1960s meant when he said he "cleaned up radio" - way to long jingles that sounded great, but took a bit too long to get where they were going. Who knows. It's all about camp these days, so enjoy!
