Celebrating a decade of the Jetsam.....

Today March 26th, marks a decade this little project I started because I collected all these tapes, and it's time to come up with something to do with them. Working in radio production for a couple of radio stations, I tended to take a few tapes home after the commericals were finished airing, before they were erased to be reused for other purposes. Stuff that caught my ears one way or another. My wife actually came up with the name, and I wrote the purpose as posted on this page. Everything came together, and over time, I've had people contact me looking for "that one spot" that they cannot find anywhere. I wish I was a miracle worker, but the reality is, I only have so many, and this is why posts have not been frequent over the last few months. This will continue, but this blog will not be considered dead in my mind. If I find something of interest, it will be posted.

For our 10th Anniversary, I have a rather incredibly nice package that is a time capsule of the mid 1960s that a friend gave me cleaning out his records. the "now sound" of the 1960s reflects in this jingle package that is more a PSA then anything else, about taking a portable radio everywhere you go a "lively companion" as it were. It was done right, top 40 artists and stars of the time, with the Johnny Mann Singers, who sang a majority of the big top 40 radio station jingles in the US and beyond of that time.



The whole package is colorful with distinctive artwork and coloring, so I have included lot of pics of the package.

Generic Jingles for a Funeral Home? Yep.....

With halloween tomorrow, I thought I'd go a bit creepy, because, well, nothing says talking about death then a jingle, no matter how tasteful you try to make it. At least in my mind. WKRP did the wole ferriman up tempo funeral home jingle thing back in the 70s, and well they were shooting for laughs, this set of jingles was serious business. I'd love to hear the copy someone would have come up with for these jingles...It would be interesting.


That's not to say there isn't other fun stuff here, The garden side of the disc has some bad puns in the lyrics you sort of expect. Just add a hypy over the top used car salesman type announcer and you'll have a great spot.


The image ideas disc has some very generic comments about sales that you can almost use anywhere....campy as they are.

Come On Over.....and I'll buy you a Beer......

I haven't had some 1970s US Beer spots in awhile it seems....well, if I did it recently in the last year or so, I couldn't find them on a quick google search, so here's some more. From a tape collection I bought years ago off ebay, i'm still getting some mileage out of the material in it. No doubt most, if not all these reels are jingles forgotten in time. One thing that amazes me is how hravily compressed the audio is. It was the era I suppose, AM radio was king, and everything is produced for AM Radio. Heavily compressed meant pushing out of your speakers much like squeezing a balloon and watching it bulge in certain areas. The bulge is the loudness of the audio increased. It does sacrifice audio quality though. The quality isn't much better then a black and white TV back then. It still got the message across.

From April 1976 a Variety of Jingles for Papst Blue Ribbon Beer. Note that cut 4 on this tape was ruined by someone recording over part of it, so with a bit of editing of the :60 jingle from cut 1, I came reasonably close to the original.

Finally, from May 1977, this really isn't a jingle, but some great creative about beer. Seems a quick google search implies the company is still around too, or maybe it's just someone else used the name for a restaurant. In any event, there's are 2 great spots.

Remember that "Banana Jingle"?????

...for Chiquita Bananas specifically, it dates back to the 1940s. In fact, here's a you tube LINK HERE to a animated commerical run in theatres in the 40s, with Carmen Miranda doing the sing for the memorable jingle.

We, however, present a mid 1980s take on the whole jingle, singing the song in various situations which reflect the titles of the versions (as noted on the box below)

Please note, the 1st cut audio I did a ok edit on, as the tape was missing the very first part of the cut, so I took the missing part from the second cut and put it on the first to make it more complete (got it? I know it's a bit confusing!!)


Also, starting with this exhibit, I am moving the source audio to Google Drive as an experiment.

Going through some of the tanner stuff I have, I found 2 5001 Lps.....apparently there was a "R" version of 5001, which I will assume is revision, despite the fact it has a totally different label, or maybe this is where the company decided to change the labels? Who knows.

A Mix of Stuff to Start off 2019

Greetings....

For our first post of 2019, we mix it up as I decide to just grab what I find easily in the vault of boxes where I store the commerical tapes that get posted here. There's more then a few, so I've decided to make it easy this time around with some commerical jingles and a Tanner LP of generics.


First off from 1995 is a Thruway Muffler jingle package. There are still Thruway muffler shops in Canada, though that's based on a google search, I haven't been to one myself. The "Talkin to the Boss" jingles raised an interesting angle implying that no matter who you talk to at the shop, "you're talkin to the boss" which makes me wonder if all those people are bosses, who the hell does the actual work? I ponder.

This tape is fun as it also has the french versions of the jingles...well, we are a country of french and english, but I seldom come across reels with both.

I threw this in for fun. The Bay is Canada's oldest retailer, going back to 1670 and they're still around, albeit in a limited way compared to their past, but still here in a sea of American imports floating around here. They decided to take the song "montego bay" to rewrite for their one day sale from 1993. The audio is slightly distorted, but that is the source material. Still a fun listen

Twas the month before christmas...and all around the jetsam.....

...there must be a few more christmas things to post.....yeah sure....I bet'sam.

Yeah well, tis the season to get on the holiday bandwagon like everyone else...Christmas, holidays I really don't care what the hell you call it, just don't call me late for turkey with all the trimmings this holiday season, which, I confess is always fun for the whole family.


There...all the cliche's I can think of coming out with...for now anyway.


I dug up a few things, largely christmas related but mixed in with a few other events for good measure, and why only share a couple cuts from a production album? Just makes more sense to post the entire disc.



First off, bandleader Henry Jerome, who cut more then a few Lang Worth transcriptions in his day, apparently cut a countdown to christmas disc for LW likely in the 1950s. He was likely well known enough to the audience to actually do this countdown disc, but the wiki doesn't say much. Check it out HERE if you are curious. In any event, it's still a fun countdown to christmas with a couple generic messages mixed in for good measure. Fun dated mid 20th century nostalgia!

This disc from the Pepper Library, likely dated early 1970s is kind of fun, for a couple cuts in particular on side two, The after christmas blues and the safety belt PSA's are delightfully dated and campy for the era, back when seat belts were actually an option when you bought a car and if you decided to use them. Don't get me wrong though, side one has fun jingles that are sort of like being at the bottom you're look to climb looking up....trying to get people to buy in january after breaking people's bank accounts over christmas. A monumental task in itself.

Finally, this disc has a variety of year round holiday jingles with a few christmas focused. Just think, you can use this one year around...for what? I don't know, I just post em, you figure out what you want to do with them. The Santa Claus Lane jingle in particular has a bit of a Rankin Bass christmas feel to it....I alway think Burl Ives as a snowman is about to jump in and sing!

More Lang Worth Generic Jingle Campiness!

Doing some cleaning, I found a few more of those 7 inch Lang Worth discs for a specific business, from the late 1950s. All I can say is that it was a different time, because playing these today, you really couldn't take a sponsor seriously, you'd be laughing too much.....well I am anyway....or at least a WTF moment when these are coming out of a speaker. I wish the quality was better, the discs seem to have been well used/tossed around type of thing, but I've cleaned them up as best as I can.

Not skatin around the issue...been busy.

With me, it can be feast or famine sometimes. Too much stuff I want to do, or too little....in the last few months it's been too much. My internet stream acquired a new to me 12 channel audio console from a commerical radio station last year. so after the months of prep to set it up, the install came at the end of march, and time tweaking things since. Things are finally calming down to get the jetsam back on track again.

Speaking of skating (wow....how well did I plan that one!) did you ever go see or did the Ice Capcades every appear in your town? It was usually a big deal when they did. I never did see them myself, but certainly knew it when they came to town, as radio and TV got the ad blitz to promote them. It was so intense, it was almost like aliens were here to meet the leaders (chances are they'd be disappointed if they actually did meet the leaders if social media complaining is any indication) but then you KNEW the Ice Capades were HERE! so it was effective.


Wikipedia says that ran over 50 years, starting in 1940, until about 1991 and then called Dorothy Hamill international from 1993-1995, which isn't really as a catchy name, so maybe that's why they closed down, who knows.

The ET posting for this month's exhibit is a diac a lot of stations got for the 1976-77 year of the Ice Capades, featuring Karen Magnussen for that season it seems. The wiki on Karen is HERE She certainly has some impressive credentials.

I've also included the script for the live tags for the "west" version of the spots, as is came with the disc. the odd thing is, the is no copy on the actual scripts that goes with this jingle. Just other versions. Maybe the rest of the discs got lost, who knows. It's about a 15 second ending so, there's one :15 sec copy you can probably use if you want to create your own vintage ad.

I feel like freakin Oprah on one of her favorite Things shows....except we don't have to worry about Oprah not paying the taxes for the stuff here.....I PAY the taxes.....but there isn't any, which is why I pay the taxes!!!!


I wish I could totally take the credit for play the jingle santa, but I share it and actually pass the credit really to Sammy Reed. After I said, you know i'm pretty much tapped out, what do you have around?, next thing I know I get a massive file with over and HOUR (yes an HOUR) of a variety of "off the rack" stuff you usually find here. The quality varies, but given the rarity of this stuff, It's fun to actually hear it.







There's SOOOOOOOO much material here, that Sammy did up a list and checked it twice (i'm assuming!) and I split the massive file into 2 parts to make it easier to download. The list speaks for itself. I can't say much more then that, so I won't.

The Tanner 3000 Series...IN STEREO! WHOH!

We have contributor Sammy Reed bringing you the existing sounds of the Tanner 3000 series this time around. This is good, as I don't have these, and the times I came across a Tanner disc that said it was "In Stereo" it wasn't...strange really. Nevertheless, these are campy like a lot of the other ones.

This is the first record of the Tanner Total Sound Library, which later became New TTS.

A short, incomplete history lesson about the 30xx category ("Business Commercials", later "Specific Businesses"): At first, they devoted a whole side to jingles for one type of business (Side 1, autos, side 2, banks). 3004 is entirely farm equipment, with a "hick" music style (I think that's gonna be the next one I want to send). It was in 3005 - after the 1st 3 jingles which were all for drug stores - when the jingles started being for different things.



Let's hope we can get some more here......especially 3004.....YES, send that one my way soon....YEE HAW!!!!...OK, wait a minute, I suppose we should do in it order if we are going to. I can wait if I have to.


As for me, i'll see if I can get something out Christmas related before Christmas, but the reality is, i'm tapped out, short of just Christmas production music beds from some of the libraries I have. No real jingles to the point where there's a whole album or even a side really. I think I have a disc of combination which includes 1 or 2 christmas, end of year, January stuff, so that's likely as close as i'll get to anything like I have posted in the past, but we'll give that a try.

More Campy Tanner foolishness......

Recently, I got an email.....

"I am intrigued by the Pepper Tanner production library cuts that you
share on the blog. Do you have any of the discs featuring singing
one-liners for station jingles or advertisers? I also am interested
in the discs featuring program sounders and themes from the Pepper
Tanner era. Man, I wished I would have made copies of them when I
had the chance!"

(yeah, it looks like William Shatner wrote it, but it's just the way it shows up on this page...can't fix it!)

Well, i'm not one on requests, mainly because I get people saying "do you have this jingle?" or "do you have that jingle?" The answer usually is no, because if you haven't easily found it anywhere else, I am likely not to have it (though I have been wrong on that occasionally)

This is a different story though. It's material I already have.

I went through some of the Tanner LP's this month and found something that might full both requests. Accapellas for various station features....weather...sports, that sorta thing, and generic sings for advertisers. I will search more in the future to see what I can find, but here's a start.

By the way this collection was given to me by a ex radio station employee who thought i'd might like them, as he saved them headed for the trash some years ago, and I thought i'd put a few up for the hell of it, as they are jingles and technically jetsam as they were tossed.

Who knew I was going to start something. I guess now, you have a second chance to get a few things :)

Local Full Sing Fun (part one) MALLS!

In the years since I have started the Jetsam largely to share some of the hundreds of tapes I collected in my years working in radio station production, I have focused on the national or US based creative for national sponsors of products.....

Until now......


Recently, a largely regional, that turned national grocery chain decided to redo a TV spot they produced in the 1980s, called "Stars Of Christmas" People have such fond memories of this local TV ad as that was played to death for many years every holiday season that some people feel their Christmas isn't just right without it. Thanks to youtube, the memory continues long after it's off the air. If you have no idea what I am talking about, see it HERE!


That got me thinking.....

I've got some local jingles that have not been heard in years, and in some cases DECADES since anyone else has heard them but me.

I've saved my share of tapes over the years....when I say "often rescued from the dumpster and tape eraser" I'm NOT kidding. Tapes have often been erased after airing, lost to those who can remember these quick little songs. My philosophy was if it catches my ear, I want a copy of it.

Jingle packages are especially interesting. Advertisers are putting a brand to a song that is meant to be an earworm to remember, yet they are discarded all too quick like the rest of radio commericals to be tossed. They are kept around however more then the rest as ad copy can be changed and the brand earworm remains. but, they too, often fade into the past.

The material over the next few posts collects some jingles local to my area of the Halifax Regional Municipality here in Nova Scotia Canada from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. That doesn't mean they were recorded here (though some were) but mainly local businesses in the area. Some are still in business, some are not, and even if you have never heard of them before, I think it's fair to say, they're catchy, like most jingles ever produced. Note selected cuts are available for listening here, not the entire package.

But first, some details regarding the terminology you'll hear here.

A "Full Sing" is a complete 30 or 60 sec jingle with lyrics that brands the product or service. These jingles are actually seldom heard complete on air, as usually the advertiser has an announcer with copy to read with the jingle. To hear these is rare outside the industry I used to work in.

A "Donut" or "Jingle with Donut" is not something you eat, but very much like the one you eat. It's a jingle that had only part singing, and somewhere in the middle there's just instrumental music so an announcer can read ad copy over the music, then the end part is the rest of the jingle. The fun part is getting the announcer to read the ad copy fast enough so he doesn't talk over the end part of the jingle....that can certainly cause a few outakes and 4 letter words when he reads it just a wee bit too slow.



SUBJECT-MALLS


Let's start off with one of the largest Malls in the area MIC MAC MALL. Crazy as it sounds, every christmas time for many years, this mall took another approach to the traditional mall santa, and created "Woody The Talking Christmas Tree" which took up massive space in center court with kids lining up to talk to Woody. The happened over many years, until it was abruptly ended a couple of years ago with the mall finally scrapping the tradition causing outrage with local people who grew up with Woody. The rage eventually died down. people moved on, but endearing memories of woody survive, as does this Christmas Concept package from likely the 2nd half of the 1980s (no specific date) You'll hear both the full sing and jingle with donut which includes 2 "woody" 60 sec spots.

Halifax Shopping Centre was one of the first malls in the area, opening in 1962 at the site of the original airport and still thrives to this day, current under going major renovations (what mall doesn't do that regularly?) This jingle with donut was produced by Mark Century Corporation NYC in the late 1960s-early 1970s era, and certainly has the sound from then. I wish I had the exact date.

This jingle appears to be produced locally....Scotia Square is also involved with major renos right now. It used to be two levels of shops and services, but is now restricted to the lower level with offices taking the top level. Interesting how malls brag in their jingles what they are. For Scotia Square, I think they lay it on a big thick, but maybe that's just me.

Another mall in downtown Halifax, Maritime Mall, sits below a massive office tower. Back in 1984 it was thriving, but has since been more office and empty space the last time I was there. Still very catchy. You could dance to this one...remix anybody?

From 1986 comes this full sing from Woodlawn Mall. Like a lot of smaller malls in the area, this one was turned into a strip mall with numerous businesses and technically is still doing well

Finally, This is a unique one, taking the 80's "Hot Hot Hot" song by Buster Poindexter or Arrow and customizing it for a mall. did anyone pay royalties to the song's writer? We wonder......
