Come On Over.....and I'll buy you a Beer......

I haven't had some 1970s US Beer spots in awhile it seems....well, if I did it recently in the last year or so, I couldn't find them on a quick google search, so here's some more. From a tape collection I bought years ago off ebay, i'm still getting some mileage out of the material in it. No doubt most, if not all these reels are jingles forgotten in time. One thing that amazes me is how hravily compressed the audio is. It was the era I suppose, AM radio was king, and everything is produced for AM Radio. Heavily compressed meant pushing out of your speakers much like squeezing a balloon and watching it bulge in certain areas. The bulge is the loudness of the audio increased. It does sacrifice audio quality though. The quality isn't much better then a black and white TV back then. It still got the message across.

From April 1976 a Variety of Jingles for Papst Blue Ribbon Beer. Note that cut 4 on this tape was ruined by someone recording over part of it, so with a bit of editing of the :60 jingle from cut 1, I came reasonably close to the original.

Finally, from May 1977, this really isn't a jingle, but some great creative about beer. Seems a quick google search implies the company is still around too, or maybe it's just someone else used the name for a restaurant. In any event, there's are 2 great spots.

Christmas....happy times of food and fun....and Jingles all the way......

Well, today hasn't been good, no water in the house and waiting for a plumber battling with dog poop where it shouldn't be (carpet cleaner is handy fortunately) and I broke the toilet tank lid.....You can see how my day is going. Still, I shall take a few minutes to look forward to this holiday season with some both local and "off the rack" material that I know you international people like. I'm probably scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel for Christmas stuff this blog is known for, I've posted pretty much everything I have, but I might see what bits and pieces I can dig up for next year...no guarantees.

First....a bit of a footnote from last post....

SOBEYS has released the "Star Of Christmas" remade jingle this year as a free download on their website as of this writing. I mentioned and linked the original TV spot last time. The bonus is that they will donate $1/per download to charity, so even if you have no idea who or what Sobeys is in your area on the planet, it's a fun "warm and fuzzy" jingle you can incorporate for your holiday listening and help a good cause too. I don't endorse Irving Oil per say, but if you live here in Atlantic Canada and drive a car, you've probably stopped at one of their gas stations. I have. That's about as far an an endorsement I will give. They have made some neat Christmas jingles over the years though. I've kept a couple of them, and this being a "just in time for the holidays" moment (wow, how do I do that?) here's what we have.....

Finally, Bolands, a company who ran the local IGA franchise for a number of years (they were bought out by Loblaws and eventually discontinued the IGA brand) commissioned a locally produced jingle and song in the early 1990s that got quite a bit of play in December 1993, and was sort of forgotten about. We try not to forget things at the jetsam, in fact we always understand that today's jingles are tomorrows nostalgia. That's always been the reason we keep these tapes (and they're catchy too!!) below is the :60 version. The full 2 minute version was posted just over 3 years ago here on This Page on the Jetsam with full credits either way, enjoy both.

FINALLY......Off the Rack Stuff....


I bought this production music LP some 6 years ago at a record sale in Portland Maine....always wish I had the whole library, as this stuff too often gets tossed when the CD libraries too over. Yeah, it's a bit dated, it's 1977 after all, but no disco feel for this stuff....more like warm and fuzzy. For you christmas compilation folks....I'm sure this will fit in nicely. As you know, I'm too lazy to cut it up for you, but hey, I did clean it up with noise reduction software, so it's nice and clean overall.

Local Full Sing Fun (part one) MALLS!

In the years since I have started the Jetsam largely to share some of the hundreds of tapes I collected in my years working in radio station production, I have focused on the national or US based creative for national sponsors of products.....

Until now......


Recently, a largely regional, that turned national grocery chain decided to redo a TV spot they produced in the 1980s, called "Stars Of Christmas" People have such fond memories of this local TV ad as that was played to death for many years every holiday season that some people feel their Christmas isn't just right without it. Thanks to youtube, the memory continues long after it's off the air. If you have no idea what I am talking about, see it HERE!


That got me thinking.....

I've got some local jingles that have not been heard in years, and in some cases DECADES since anyone else has heard them but me.

I've saved my share of tapes over the years....when I say "often rescued from the dumpster and tape eraser" I'm NOT kidding. Tapes have often been erased after airing, lost to those who can remember these quick little songs. My philosophy was if it catches my ear, I want a copy of it.

Jingle packages are especially interesting. Advertisers are putting a brand to a song that is meant to be an earworm to remember, yet they are discarded all too quick like the rest of radio commericals to be tossed. They are kept around however more then the rest as ad copy can be changed and the brand earworm remains. but, they too, often fade into the past.

The material over the next few posts collects some jingles local to my area of the Halifax Regional Municipality here in Nova Scotia Canada from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. That doesn't mean they were recorded here (though some were) but mainly local businesses in the area. Some are still in business, some are not, and even if you have never heard of them before, I think it's fair to say, they're catchy, like most jingles ever produced. Note selected cuts are available for listening here, not the entire package.

But first, some details regarding the terminology you'll hear here.

A "Full Sing" is a complete 30 or 60 sec jingle with lyrics that brands the product or service. These jingles are actually seldom heard complete on air, as usually the advertiser has an announcer with copy to read with the jingle. To hear these is rare outside the industry I used to work in.

A "Donut" or "Jingle with Donut" is not something you eat, but very much like the one you eat. It's a jingle that had only part singing, and somewhere in the middle there's just instrumental music so an announcer can read ad copy over the music, then the end part is the rest of the jingle. The fun part is getting the announcer to read the ad copy fast enough so he doesn't talk over the end part of the jingle....that can certainly cause a few outakes and 4 letter words when he reads it just a wee bit too slow.



SUBJECT-MALLS


Let's start off with one of the largest Malls in the area MIC MAC MALL. Crazy as it sounds, every christmas time for many years, this mall took another approach to the traditional mall santa, and created "Woody The Talking Christmas Tree" which took up massive space in center court with kids lining up to talk to Woody. The happened over many years, until it was abruptly ended a couple of years ago with the mall finally scrapping the tradition causing outrage with local people who grew up with Woody. The rage eventually died down. people moved on, but endearing memories of woody survive, as does this Christmas Concept package from likely the 2nd half of the 1980s (no specific date) You'll hear both the full sing and jingle with donut which includes 2 "woody" 60 sec spots.

Halifax Shopping Centre was one of the first malls in the area, opening in 1962 at the site of the original airport and still thrives to this day, current under going major renovations (what mall doesn't do that regularly?) This jingle with donut was produced by Mark Century Corporation NYC in the late 1960s-early 1970s era, and certainly has the sound from then. I wish I had the exact date.

This jingle appears to be produced locally....Scotia Square is also involved with major renos right now. It used to be two levels of shops and services, but is now restricted to the lower level with offices taking the top level. Interesting how malls brag in their jingles what they are. For Scotia Square, I think they lay it on a big thick, but maybe that's just me.

Another mall in downtown Halifax, Maritime Mall, sits below a massive office tower. Back in 1984 it was thriving, but has since been more office and empty space the last time I was there. Still very catchy. You could dance to this one...remix anybody?

From 1986 comes this full sing from Woodlawn Mall. Like a lot of smaller malls in the area, this one was turned into a strip mall with numerous businesses and technically is still doing well

Finally, This is a unique one, taking the 80's "Hot Hot Hot" song by Buster Poindexter or Arrow and customizing it for a mall. did anyone pay royalties to the song's writer? We wonder......

Remembering those wonderful waterbeds on a day that comes once every 4 years.

Happy Feb 29th! I was watching "The Goldbergs" on TV the other night and the story told how Murray's furniture store wasn't doing great, and resisted selling those new futon's (the series is set in the 1980s!) while he was pushing the waterbeds. The show goes on eventually having him sleeping in his own store and having him not sleeping well in the waterbeds, but slept like a baby on the futon. This makes me wonder, did he need one of these off the rack jingles we are featuring on the jetsam this month? You know that might have helped clean out the waterbeds so he can move on to the futons. Funny how the show did say what happened to that waterbed, but hell, can you even get them today? They certainly see to be a relic of the 70s and 80s.

Finally, we're getting closed to vacations and a busy time for rental car companies, so time to dig out the jingle package for Budget car Sales. This is where they sell off their rentals cars after the typical renter has run the cars though god knows what and you decide you need a nice clean used car to roll down the highway of your life. Hey, who am I to say otherwise? Well, I can't think of any other reason to post this one, so enjoy!

Those Mad Men want to teach the world to sing......and more magnificent mars music beds....

With the series finale of Mad Men recently (I've never seen a single episode!) and how it ended with one of the most iconic ad campaigns of the last 50 years, I thought i'd tie in the jetsam with a nice little record I picked up many years ago. This was no doubt issued during the campaign in 1971-72 era, but I don't have an exact date, in fact I don't even know why this was made to start with. Was it a giveaway? It could have been. A co worker suggested I should actually watch the series. I might give it a try, and I don't necessarily have to avoid spoilers, as all I know it ended with the Coke "I'd like to teach the world to sing" campaign. The rest, is a mystery to me.

This includes the original 60 second jingle, and 2 count em, 2 versions by canadian artists, The Laurie Bower Singers and Dr. Music. I doubt this was ever heard outside the country, and likely long forgotten. Not anymore, thanks to the jetsam

I survived the winter..now, some beer and cash.....

Should I start how it seemed to be the winter from hell?

In my area in Atlantic Canada, it was easily the worst winter in a decade, back to back storms dumping feet filled piles on snow down on the roads. I got stuck multiple times in my own driveay, besides the fact of the 5 feet of snow I had to shovel more then once out of the end. You work all week and then have to shovel snow in the driveway, oh wait, even one day I couldn't get to work because the snow drift was too high for the car, I call in sick, and still spend 4 hours shovelling a way out of the driveway. That and being sick on and off because I never had time to really recover....made for a really exhausting last few months. Hope yours was much better.

I guess I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now, as I'm back posting on the jetsam.


One of the things we like to post here is stuff that's likely long forgotten. We can get the more famous TV spots and radio ads on you tube, and other places on line, but over here, if we find something like this, we love posting it because it's likely not been heard since originally aired.

Here's two that haven't been heard in a long time.

Two Carlsberg Light Beer jingles with a real jazz flavor to them. I guess they were trying to market to a more high brow discriminating clientele? makes me wonder.

As a bit of a bonus, I found a reel doing some sorting around of a PSA that Johnny Cash did for the Seventh Day Adventists on quitting smoking. Apparently their program helped him and now it can help you. The date on this is probably 1970s, but I have nothing to go on. Lots of Johnny Cash fans out there still, so thought i'd put this up as a rare piece of audio.

Yes I have more (and just actually found them looking for something else a couple weeks ago) and no, I don't have the whole set...maybe 8. It's likely I'll be posting one next month since it's been awhile, and hey, I found the ones I have....watch next month to find out for sure.

Welcome to 2015.....and we start with a Cheesy Song about AIDS from 1988.

No,the jetsam isn't dead.....just hibernating for a bit, and with a bit of warm snap (well, around where I live) this winter, it's time to wake up and smell the cheese on this reel of tape.

Another reason is my beloved Studer Reel to Reel Machine was sick for a few weeks. After some time troubleshooting the problem, parts were ordered and a couple weeks of waiting, parts were installed and up and running again. Can't complain, the last time it broke down to this degree was 7 years previous, so while i'm fixing other gear in my vintage gear radio studio here in the basement of my humble house, I feel like a maytag repair for this beast. Willi Studer seems to have lives up to his reputation. And to think, this machine was tossed, and avoided the dumpster thanks to a friend of mind in the right place at the right time! Gotta love that.

And what's the first thing I dubbed on the machine after the fix? Why the reel posted here today:

I forget exactly where this came from, I think it might have come in as part of a music service at a station I worked for. It was never played until I transferred it for the jetsam and fortunately, in great shape because of it.


Now about the content. Over time, some things hold up better then others when we look back. This can be largely because of our biased memories of fondly remembering things with our happy filters. This stuff doesn't hold up well. I suppose that's what makes it interesting today.

In the era of "We Are The World" and "Hands Across America" just a few short years before, I can sort of see why an important message about AIDS would get the happy feel good spin in song. Today, looking back it's more of a WTF going through your head when you listen to this in all it's glory. When hormones rage, I doubt anyone would really care about anything written like this. REALLY!, yet here it is. If anything it's a good laugh at how a serious matter was dealt with in the 80s.

For the rest of the reel, It's a mix of campy PSA's and reflects the time. Of special note is Tom Bodett of Motel 6 ad fame doing a PSA for voting away from home, Voting for Black American's featuring one PSA voiced by Canadian actor Percy Rodriguez, who was all over TV and movies from the 1950s-80s including movie trailers (Wiki Info: HERE) just a great set of pipes, and even in 1988, some people didn't have a telephone in their home (in 2015, I'm guessing it's all cell phones now) can't you image that? Apparently so.

50 years of Donuts in Canada.....Eh?

It's been 50 years. 50 Years since Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Player Tim Horton started a Donut Shop in Hamilton, Ontario that now has over 2000 outlets in Canada and parts of the US and is probably as Canadian as Hockey, or hell, probably MORE Canadian as Hockey.

I suppose you can compare it to Dunkin Donuts in the US, with how many stores there actually are, but it seems Canadians are far more passionate about "Timmies" as we call it. I saw on a shirt once "Gimmie My Timmies and No One Gets Hurt" or walk around Canada anywhere and someone might say "Double Double" which is a common term in Canada for "double cream double sugar" in your coffee. Don't get me started on every spring when "Rim Rage" begins, related to their yearly 'Roll up the Rim to Win" contest. If you see cups littering the landscape, you can blame it on someone who rolled the rim, and did not win, and threw away the cup in disgust.

Thus we devote this month's jetsam exhibit to Tim Horton's. I only wish we had more material, but spanning 1986 to 2011 with a number of radio jingles and ads is still kinda cool. There's even a full song you could download when they came out with a full jingle. Just check them all out below, In chronological order. Details on the tape box pictures and links below them for the audio.

In 2011, Tim Horton's celebrated the 25th anniversary of their "Roll Up The Rim To Win" Contest. From a Tim's press release: "Created in 1986 as a "thank you" to Tim Hortons guests at 246 restaurants in Canada, the unique contest has grown into a global annual event at more than 3,500 restaurants in Canada, the United States and Afghanistan. The biggest prize in 1986 was a snack pack of Timbits. Since then, Tim Hortons has given away nearly 500 cars and hundreds of millions of coffee and donuts."

Guess what? They did a 25th Anniversary Jingle, and strangely enough, really explains the Canadian tradition every spring to either win a great prizes or "Rim Rage" and get an invitation to buy another cup of coffee.

Finally, also in 2011 (I was bad with dates on this one!) Tim's revealed their new campaign and slogan "It's Time for Tim's" which was a scaled down version of a previous slogan, "You've always got time for Tim Horton's" There have been different versions of the jingle since, but when it came out, you could actually download the full song. It's a catchy bad ear worm to stick in your head. Well, you decide.

It's a LOT for this month, but it is Timmie's 50th. Did I mention I actually collect the paper cups you get coffee in? They change their designs (especially yearly for Christmas) on a regular basis as they advertise various things on their cups and are always changing them. Kinda fun and a cheap hobby. Thank god my wife puts up with me. :)
