For November 2012...It's a Lang Worth Christmas!

Back in 2010, I posted a number of Lang Worth Feature Programs Christmas Jingles counting down the shopping days til Christmas. If you missed them, here is the LINK to download the whole bunch in one zip.

BUT WAIT THERE EVEN MORE!!! I found these discs poking around in with some other material, so thought I would include them in a Christmas salute on the jetsam for both November and December. I'll include some of that background Christmas music from some of the libraries I have and anything else I can find jingle and Christmas related.

The date on this Lang Worth disc in December 1964, obviously because that's when the station received it. It included the custom inner sleeve you see at the top of this page.

The music is basically church oriented 60 sec backgrounds you can use in various messages or commericals on the air. Still fun to hear this stuff though, as Lang Worth material is not common, much less :60 sec versions of Christmas classics.

I also found another countdown shopping days til christmas disc, called "Christmas with Henry" from Lang Worth. It's self explanatory. Doing a quick google search, I believe It's non other then Henry Jerome, from the Hanry Jerome orchestra counting down the shopping days until christmas. The Henry Jerome orchestra did record for Lang Worth in the 40s and the early 50s, so it makes sense. Regardless, enjoy the jingles.

75th Years Of Radio in Canada.....and 70s Jeans...

1994 was the 75th anniversary of radio in Canada, initially started in 1919 by Ted Rogers, in what would eventually be CFCF in Montreal, radio with support from the railway, would eventually go coast to coast in a matter of a few years. Rogers is still one of the biggest media companies in Canada, with roots in TV, cell phones, and of course radio. They also own the Toronto Blue Jays (at least partially)

This jingle package was created for the event. Not sure if anyone used it on the air, but you could almost use it today. It's a nice tribute to the medium with a few other spots within the reel besides jingle also. enjoy>

We step back to the 70s with this jingle from Levis. Known for their TV commericals in the 70s and 80s, you don't hear a lot of the radio spots from that era, so here's one.

Fall is Here!. Hope you had a great summer. I suppose the highlight of my summer was acquiring a 1948 vintage RCA 70d broadcast turntable that was working and just needed a little TLC is getting going with a new cartridge and wiring. I only wish the tonearm was of that vintage, it's more likely from the late 60s, early 70s. Still a nice antique to obtain and with a 16 inch platter to play transcriptions. Here's a pic with new felt:

I actually had to buy machine oil and 50 weight motor oil to get it all lubricated. complete with 2 and 1/2 ft high wooden cabinet covered in metal, This beast was built to last with a solid shaft and true meaning of "direct drive" for turntables. It's a shame a lot of these got tossed into dumpsters in the early 70s (according to one blog). I'm just glad to add it to my arsenal to transfer audio. It also came with a small amount of transciption discs, including some national commericals, so look for a few here in a future post. I might add that this month's exhibits were transferred on this turntable. We're posting this month with a album I got back in maine a couple years ago. It's a demo album of award winning commericals from 1967. No doubt hard to find, you'll here some jingles in with the regular spoken word spots, including a Petula Clark coke ad on Side 1.

This time for commerical production music we look at the series "The Director" which is another series I have and I did use professionally in the 80s when I was doing radio production. It usually consisted of cueing up the music track on the turntable, announcer in the booth, rolling a reel tape, and starting the turntable, when the music starts, so does the announcer, and eventually would be dubbed to broadcast cart for airing. This LPs often were used and abused on a daily basis, and held up well, until they were ditched for CDs. I don't think a lot of these libraries were ever reissued on CD because they were dated as hell, and production libraries were always coming out with new stuff, and often didn't look back. In any event, here's disc 2 of "The Director"

I'm a little embarrased to say.......

Well, the summer is almost over, and it's been a nice break to take time and work on other things and think about the Jetsam. For the last few months, it's been an afterthought and chore which my wife encouraged to do. That's not a bad thing that my wife encouraged it, but it was a bit of a rush because I had other things to do. This is why I wanted a break. It's good for perspective. It's also good to read the comments that have been left. it was such a chore, that I didn't even notice people were leaving comments. Just call me dumb ass. I haven't responded or read them all, but I will. Just give me some time. So, I'll be back in the fall with the Jetsam, in other words, sometime next month. I'll set a realistic goal of 1 post/month and see what happens. This may not be an actual jingle, but some radio commerical that may include a jingle or not, or more of the "off the rack" jingles. We'll see what happens. I'll open up the floor for comments and suggestions of what you like to see here. I can certainly post some local jingles from my area of Halifax, NS Canada also. I shunned away from local/regional stuff, but that just might add to it here and make it unique. I want the jetsam to continue, but would love your input. Summer Break......

Time to take the summer off, regroup and consider continuing this blog! It's been a lot of fun, but my time has been taken on the weekly radio show and the internet stream not mention repair and maintenance of the vintage gear involved. We'll post again in the fall. Buick Automobile Jingles 1990

Here's a different source....a video tape. TV commericals use a variety of "stock footage" to produce the final commerical. Stock footage is footage that is shot and often used over and over again for various reasons, usually to save money. Need footage of a particular city or landmark? Stock footage can provide this to save you the cost of sending someone to do it for you. In automobile commericals, "running footage" is shot and provided to the car dealer to produce a TV commerical. like stock footage, it can be used over and over again for various reasons. It is, the car "running" on the roads and general driving "beauty" shots to entice you to watch the TV spot....you're suppose to go "ohhhhhh" and "ahhhhhh" in your mind when you see it. Yeah, what does this have to do with the Jetsam? While this tape had a lot of nice looking Buick vehicles dated from 1990, it also had the full jingle package to help produce the audio portion of the commerical. This also includes the local announcer voice over between the singing parts of the jingle, often called the "donut" because the middle has a hole for the local VO. Sing outs are sort of a "1/2 donut" with instrumental music for the VO and then the singers out with the jingle. Getting you up to speed on some jargon before I give you the list of 30 (yes 30) cuts in this package. I feel it isn't practical to post the individual cuts here, so I've included them all as they were on the video tape, with silence between cuts on one 320kbps stereo mp3. 70s Vintage....do you really eat the red ones last?

Here's a neat promotional 45 from, obviously 1976. Anyone from Canada over 35 will recognize the Smarties jingle. It was played to death throughout the late 70s and early 80s. The others, probably not to much, but still it's good to post the whole 45. You kind of wonder what the record was made for...for giveaways? For customers of the chocolate company? Makes you wonder. Just still kind of fun to find this, as it was part of my childhood....that dang Smarties Jingle. Smarties are still around. They seem to be a canadian thing, as anyone outside of the country will likely not know about them. In any event, as Canada is a bi lingual country, enough the jingles, in both English and French.
