Pledge Allegiance to the corporate flag!

Corporate culture can be interesting. Like a entire government within our society in some aspects. You kind of wonder if employees have to stand at attention when corporate anthems like this are suddenly played in the workplace, break room, etc, on company property anyway.

This particular anthem just makes me think of a large group of people standing at attention with pride and passion and drive as they work. This corporate anthem is proud, bold and grand in it's message.

Did we mention though it's about where you buy your gas for your car? I mean, with gas being largely regulated where I live and everyone pay the same price, it's hard to get into the pride, passion and drive mentality when the tank creeps close to the E mark. It's more for me about where can I go close that I don't have to wait too long to pump my own gas.

Still, you have to admire both the main and country versions of the anthem, as it might have been a last ditched effort to promote the grand old Texaco brand as it stands as the loyal companion always near as you travel across this great land, assisting your fuel and automotive needs. According to what I have found online, within a year of this radio spot airing, in 1989, the Texaco brand in Canada was sold to imperial oil, and dissolved, with the stations rebranded or shut down. Kind of sad in a way, but at least it went out in style.

Borrowing money can be this happy.......according to Superman....

You don't see money loaning agencies doing this much of a soft sell these days.

From late 1979, with such a 70s MOR non disco feel to it, comes a series of jingles and spots from the Household Finance Corporation or HFC. Instead of the "if you need cash NOW come here" in your face type style, this is more of a "hey, we're in the neighborhood, and we're here to help, so if you need money come on by" type of approach. That's more my style if I need your services.

The voiceover talent is very interesting here, if you know anything about VO talent. It's Danny Dark!. Yes, that's the name he used in the industry. In addition to doing network TV promos for NBC and voiceover work for Keebler TV commericals in the 70s and 80s, he was also the voice over "Superman" throughout most of the 70s "Superfriends" Saturday morning cartoons that ran on ABC and produced by Hanna Barbera (and at least some of them are now on DVD). His deep baritone with a macho feel certainly fit that role quite well.

It's all the more reason to listen to the Christmas spots on this package. Danny doing a warm and fuzzy type read on "Peace" "Sharing" and "Sounds" really doesn't work in my mind, as he doesn't do warm and fuzzy well. It's just bad casting, but he probably had the contract, so you do what you can.

Off the Rack Jingles for May 2011

Another randomly picked LP from the pepper/tanner collection of albums I received awhile back. Some of this stuff is in such great shape I wonder if it was ever used. It really follows the belief of the jetsam, to help preserve the material that would have been lost and live for another day, or use.

With this bunch in particular, you can really let the imagination run wild, as some of these jingles can be uset up to be taken out of context. "Hey Pretty Girl" and "We Do" in particular stick out as a couple, that, well, have "possibilities depending on how creative you are, but hey, if you just like jingles, you'll enjoy them too.

Tie a Yellow Ribbon around a Dodge Vehicle?

Sometimes material of the past really stands the test of time and sounds as fresh as it did when it was created new, years even decades previous.

And then again, there's stuff that sounds as dated as a 70s wah wah pedal or 80s synthesized drums. You dig it out now and then maybe chuckle a little bit, then put it on the shelf again for when you feel nostalgic and maybe time for another chuckle and a WTF I can't believe someone produced this s*** moment.

Wanna guess which catagory this month's exhibit belongs?

Tie a Yellow Ribbon by Tony Orlando and Dawn was a Monster # 1 hit from 1974. According to Wikipedia "sold 3 million records in three weeks" and was "the sign a released convict requested from his wife or lover to indicate that she would welcome him home. He would be able to see it from the bus driving by their house, and would stay on the bus in the absence of the ribbon."

You can see where the song ends can't ya? Even if you never heard it before...yes, 100 yellow ribbons are on the tree and so the song ends on a happy note.

How this emotion translates to selling Dodge Trucks and Cars is something I could ponder for eternity. The only answer I can come up with is someone thought it would be cute to redo a popular song as a jingle for Dodge. Geesh, couldn't pick something more upbeat and happy? If anyone is familiar with the song and it's meaning, it just...well, sounds bad, back then, and 37 years later this month.

Still, it's these little "gems of corporate embarrasement" we like to pride ourselves in digging out now and then here at the jetsam. This is for everyone who wants a bit of a chuckle in your otherwise cloudy day. Pop these mp3's into the ipod and grin from ear to ear thinking that modern day advertising isn't as bad as this.

As displayed on the pic of the tape box, it isn't a dub right from the agency. It looks like one station typed the label for a dub for another station, which is often standard practice until tape usage stopped some 10 years ago.

Topical Bonus! A Tribute To Zellers....

While I strive for 2 postings per month, from time to time, there may be some additional postings based on relevant topics in the news. This is my first one in that context, and there will no doubt be more in the future.

It was announced this week, that Zellers, a major retailer in Canada for 80 years and the last of the Canadian retail brands with such a history, had its store leases sold to Target in the US for $1.8 billion. Within the next 2 to 3 years, plans are to convert most of the Zellers stores to Target stores and the remainder will be closed and properties sold off.

It's a sad day for Canadian retail. Now all the brands that people my age (in my early 40s) grew up with in Canada are largely gone. Eaton's, Woolco, and now Zellers leaves just The Bay, or the Hudson Bay Company as the one Canadian brand left. It's the oldest company in North America, dating back to the Hudson Bay Trading Co of the 1600's. I'm hoping they'll be around for a little more time.

Here at the Jetsam, with me being the Curator Of Nostalgia Commericals I thought I'd dig into the vault (well, it's cardboard boxes, but vault sounds so much better!) and see what I can find. What I did find was material, mostly from the late 1980s and early 1990s, when they were pushing two main promotions - Club Z (pronounced the canadian way of "ZED" not "ZEE") and "The Lowest Price is the Law" positioning statement.

Club Z was a points system now very common today with retail, but was fairly unheard of in the late 80s to reward loyal customers to your brand. It started out ok, but as people tended to hoard their points for something they wanted, the company started pushing up the points you needed. It likely PO'd more then a few people.

"The Lowest Price Is The Law" was also an effective way to retain people to your brand. It really takes a commitment to retain that statement however, so eventually that statement disappeared, likely due to the arrival in canada of the rather aggressive pricing retailer Walmart when it bought the bankrupt Woolco chain in the mid 1990s.

I have also included a no doubt rare "disco" jingle package for Zellers from 1979 that is as dated sounding as you think and were likely hoping for :)

For the purpose of this exhibit as there is quite a bit of audio when we factor in all the versions from 7 tapes, I have compiled a 5 minute montage of the Zellers creative to stream and download here. We start off 2011 with a 45 that's a bit of a mystery.

This record was likely produced during the early days of lotteries in Canada, at least national lotteries, likely mid-late 1970s or into the early 80s. We actually had nationally televised draws at one point.

Most of the lotteries today in Canada are regionally run, though some tickets like Lotto 6-49 can be bought across Canada. Times have changed, but the drive to buy more tickets with the bigger jackpots because the average joe sees dollar signs in their eyes certainly hasn't

The puzzle lies in the actual use of the 45. Not for sale or broadcast the label says...so what was it used for? handing out to lottery players so they can take it home and play it over and over and psyche themselves up to buy lots of lottery tickets? At Loto Canada promotional events to play in the background?

One thing is for sure, it's a fun upbeat 2 1/2 minute jingle that can be a bad earworm very easily and get stuck in your brain. The label is also wrong in that the audio is actually stereo, not mono.

As Canada is the home of two official languages, you'll find the french version here also as it was the opposite side of the 45.

The Last Of the Christmas Jingle Posts...Lang Worth...

You probably thought the Christmas Shopping Jingles was the end...

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!

Let's wrap it up with one more Christmas disc from Lang Worth. I just obtained it in September with a load of discs sitting in a friends basement for years. The date is believed to be early-mid 1960s.

Some fun jingles, and classic christmas music beds, each :60, to enjoy for yourself. with the time getting closer to christmas, I didn't both cutting them into individual tracks, just an mp3 for each side. this might work for you for the music though.

Off The Rack Generic Christmas Jingles....Just In Time for the Holidays....

Why oh why does everything Christmas come "just in time for the holidays"? Like it was actually a coincidence, and months of planning had no factor in the remarkable timing? It's getting so bad you're having "pre boxing week" sales leading up to Christmas...but isn't that a pre christmas sale? The commericalism is getting more and more foolish and arrogant every year I expect someone to just yell on TV or radio "JUST GO OUT AND BUY A F***** GIFT FOR SOMEONE WHY DON'T YA?" Yes, really, I do expect it.

But, enough of the soapbox, and more of why you're here....


From the Mars Production Library, comes this disc of both jingles and accapella one liners to incorporate into local station productions. Not sure of the date, but I'm gonna guess mid-late 1960s. Just tag them with your stations announcer or logo.

What I found this christmas though, is when I was playing background music at a charity event off my laptop, I mixed these in for good measure. They might be fun for a Christmas CD compilation you can share with your friends or a get together to add a bit of spice to your music mix. Enjoy!

I'm unintentionally striving to be the epicenter of downloadable Lang Worth material online.

The Sleeve for this series of discs actually has a date stamped on it...Nov 1952, so it's safe to say these discs are from that year. Dated and campy sure, but we still are as intense about counting down the days to the end of Christmas Shopping as we were 58 years ago.

I'll post these jingles on a per side basis, as we get closer to the next grouping. These are actually individual files, mainly because I wanted to post them on facebook to try to drive my friends nuts by the annoying catchy jingle that's in the style of "99 bottles of beer on the wall". Off The Rack Jingle Pt 2-Generic Station Promos

For future posts, I am going to rotate between radio commercial jingles and "Off the Rack" generic jingles (at least until the lawyers come after me for posting copyrighted "dated " material that is outdated and has little value other then talking about it and nostalgic reasons for the hard cores fanatics like myself) Yeah, this is worth spending big bucks on a lawyer for isn't it? PUHLEASE! I'm broke, I make no money from this venture...if you have a problem with this stuff please email me.

We Get Letters...


Speaking of email, I love hearing from people who have comments or requests. I've received two emails so far from people who have tripped across The Jingle Jetsam. One is from a guy in BC who actually runs a jingle company. He found my first post online about "Bunsmaster" Bakeries. Apparently there's a company in BC who still owns the name and was looking to get a jingle produced similar to the original from the 80's but he had no reference and "Googling" came across the Jetsam. Well, now he has heard the original jingle.

I also received a letter from someone in Montreal who is a fan of classic radio and enjoyed the Lang Worth post of 50's generic jingles. He also says interesting things about "Cheeze Pleeze" (time for a shameless plug - that's my online podcast/syndicated show dedicated to cheezy music... there is a link on the blog for the Facebook group). He was comparing the male character Snarfdude to Classic top 40 DJ's Dick Biondi and Joey Reynolds... really? Geesh, I know SD sounds like he drinks too much Red Bull, but I never thought it was to that level..... thanks..... I think.....

Right Off the Rack...

This leads me into thinking would Dick or Joey use the following posted jingles in their day? Possibly.

The Pepper Creative Library Sales Service was a series of generic jingles and sound effects for local radio stations for everything from clients who ran drive ins, car washes, supermarkets... you get the idea... to station promo material. Like anything else with "Off The Rack" intent, the lyrics are generic, nothing specific and then the announcer comes on with local client customized copy. Big important sound, low price for the client.

Over the years, the name changed from Pepper to Pepper/Tanner to Tanner, then eventually TM and these days likely Jones TM (love these corporate mergers!) but like anything dated at a radio station, it often meets the dumpster far sooner then it really should, and we're left with the memory and not much else. But wait, there's a bit of a happy ending.

Thanks to a ex-radio station former co-worker who kept a few boxes of these LP's in his basement for decades we have some excellent examples for the Jetsam.

I'll post more eventually, but let's start off with a sample of the Pepper material I have with 2 full LP offerings of mainly station promo material - it falls into the catagory of "I can't believe someone aired that". Well, just goes to show you how times really have changed in the last 50 years. Maybe this is what the late Bill Drake, the co-creator of the "Boss Radio" Format in the late 1960s meant when he said he "cleaned up radio" - way to long jingles that sounded great, but took a bit too long to get where they were going. Who knows. It's all about camp these days, so enjoy!

The Lost Burger Joint....

..well, it isn't really lost, it actually is remembered fondly south of the border in the US, it was never here in Canada, but these spots just came north of the border in a box of commericals I bought from a guy in Ohio off Ebay a few years back (and no doubt a lot of them will eventually end up here on the jetsam)

Burger Chef had its humble beginnings much like the Mcdonalds and Burger Kings and Dairy Queens that are still around. Bought by Hardees in 1981, it remained in operation until 1996, and obviously has left a mark on many people, in fact here's a whole WEBSITE dedicated to the franchise. Nostalgia is big on the internet. and just think what history would have been forgotten if blogs like this and website like the burger chef site didn't exist?

OK, so you tube has a 1974 Burger Chef COMMERICAL for your visual delight, but now for a delight for your ears.

Apparently, having fish at a burger joint is a big deal, at least for Burger Chef. Their new "Mariner" Meal radio spots have all the plastic hype you expect from 1977 and the jingle to match. Sometimes I miss the 70's for that reason. Everything is too serious now. Still, let's hear two spots promoting "Fish, at a Burger Place"

Finally, does anyone pay remember the 1970s "King Kong" movie from Paramount? Yeah, that's what I figured. Big budget, big names, and largely a big flop. Details to refresh your memory HERE They might have had big glasses as a promotional tie in with the film at Burger Chef, as the radio spot implies, but they're were probably not that big...but the commerical certainly tries, rather humorously, to be. enjoy!

Cars Cars Everywhere.....

Car salesman are...well....Sales Weasels. They have to be. They have to convince you to buy a big ticket item, often tens of thousands of dollars. they're livelihood depends on it. Some are sleazier then others, but they all bend the truth to a degree, but as long as you both walk away satisified, what's the problem?

When I heard this jingle, I thought, yeah, I can see 3 salesmen in suits plastic as one would expect doing this off broadway infomerical to get you all hyped up to buy a car. You get so enthralled in it all you're so hyped up, and can see anyone at the end of it all yellling "WHERE DO I SIGN?"

OK, back to reality.....

A fun jingle with some well established industry known talent:

- Canadian Artist/ VO Guy Keith Hampshire, known for his 1970s cover of Cat Stevens "First Cut is the Deepest" and his years of doing VO for McCain's Fries National TV Commericals (if I ever meet the guy, I want to hear him say "tastitaters" in person) he's still singing. keithhampshire.com is the place to find our more.

-Mike Kirby, a veteran national canadian voice talent, has been the voice for HGTV canada, and various national campaigns (including as of this date, one promoting Burger King's new Steak Burger in canada) also teaches his craft at voiceworx.com

-Jayne Eastwood, who does the female intro and extro, because, well, she's female. You KNOW a TV movie destined for the american market is made in Toronto, or in canada in general, when Jayne appears. she's carved a 40 year TV and film acting career and still stayed in her home and native land (which is not an easy thing with the lures of hollywood) I guess she picked up a few extra bucks here. details on her wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jayne_Eastwood

Disco, Disco Bear.....

A&W, an American restaurant chain which is still quite big in Canada, has been building on their history in this country since 1956. The walls of each restaurant are lined with their archive of pictures taken over the decades. This particular jingle may not be something they remember or want to remember fondly.

It's 1979, at the height of the disco era, and A&W doesn't want to be left out in relating to the young crowd. "Follow the root bear.." is about as intense as this jingle gets to a disco beat, but what's a bit surprising for me is the voice over announcer mixed in with the jingle. This guy is kinda creepy. Even in the loose and swinging era of the 70's, I really think any girl, even this guy's own sister, would run the other way instead of heading to A&W for a burger and fries. But who am I to say? I still think the guy comes off as creepy or desperate or maybe even both.

For Pepsi lovers (though Pepsi is the "p" word in my vocabulary) I can't deny this memorable jingle from 1986 when Tina Turner was hot, and Pepsi was still recovering from Michael Jackson's TV commercial tinged locks.

Here is the full 60 second sung jingle with tag by none other then Martin Sheen, which was the announcer voice for the entire "choice of a new generation" campaign that Pepsi did in the summer of 1986. He would go on to.. Well, do I really have to tell you? IMDB is good for that stuff.

It's Been 25 years.....

..since Coca Cola did either the stupidest idea in the company's history, or the smartest promotion they ever did. It really depends on how you look at it. In 1985, Coke came out with "New Coke" which from what I remember tasted more like Pepsi then anything else. A lot of people were upset, rallies, songs were written about not taking the old Coke away, but despite it all Coke plugged along with their promotion of the "new" Coke.
